of the road that goes uphill through 
The trees and 
then down 
into…
something.

A branch’s charcoal shadow
cast by an evening sun
traces a single line of trifling ants
following in file under an oak’s shade
avoiding the rays, scurrying;

the ghosts regretfully floated all about 
as tiny wisps of cigarette smoke choke
