through a crack in the ceiling
it poured onto the bed.
like a stream that flows from
an open vein it shot you in the head.
   you lay naked bold
open to the possibilities
your womanhood exposed
   bare. raw.
alive with anticipation.
caution from distrust.

A Sketch

for Jennifer
(whose eyes are baby-blue with a slight circle of yellow around the pupil)

I decided to embark on a skiff *
to skim the surface of steely-blue eyes.
A vessel well suited for the task
     maneuverable I could look over-side.
“I can put an oar in

The druidic priestess
haunts my visions of the night
like yonder succubus
     a terrifying delight!

The once and future Queen
     preceded Arthur of old
visiting my dreams
     and causing outward cold.

By inner warmth subdued
     I

A Maenad* roams the wild reckless me
That darkening forest of hopes and dreams:
A love sacred like an ancient oak tree
Secure without bar walls pillars or beams.

Yet the savage boar-shaped demons of doubt
Conspire with fire-vipers of fear.
“Remove this plague ” I beg those thereabout.
They terrorize all

Here I go
winding my way
down the path.

I enter the chasm of the two cliffs:
     my stony selves.
The right one like a mirror; highly polished
the left one sharp and jagged.

Staring into the mirror
     I

When I was young I would visit the desert.
It was dry and barren.
I live there now.

When in that desert
          I would catch scorpions.
Those freaks of the first order
          are equaled by
those freaks that would capture them.

Just to go back for a while
 to linger for a piece
to rest me on the stump of my memory

I'll go there older but not too late
This time I won't be alone
 this time

 I'll take the missing piece
The part that I never knew was gone
 but I knew when

"Scientists have long considered the ability to recognize oneself in a mirror to be an index of high cognitive ability...there is every reason to suspect that elephants may be capable of far more complex cognition than is currently understood or documented. ”

I used to know what is at the other end
of the road that goes uphill through
The trees and
then down
into…
something.

I used to live there.

avoiding the rays, scurrying;
