The light seeps through the blinds

Reflecting bars of light

Locking me in this quiet room

While laughter drifts in through the window

Mocking me to join the party

To forget myself

To spin freely under the stars

While sprinklers spray coldly,

And city sirens wail through busy intersections,

Yet my cerebral prison keeps me still,

Inhaling sweet charcoal aftertaste,

Mounted into the walls a/c unit,

The blue dvd light splinters into rays,

Multiplying my night vision,

And all the ordinary walls,

Are handsome with their retro tint,

The cotton sheets are cool beneath me,

Floating in my cloud above the world,

Hot air seeps in through beating moth wings,

At the back window,

Someone’s singing,

Happy Birthday,

Happy Birthday dear mommy,

And tires squeal with Honda civic delight,

Engines roaring down vacant back streets,

Echoing loudly in the car wash walls,

Stopping with hot rubbery skids,

The candle light flickers soft, than bright,

Old school music plays somewhere close by,

Kids giggle beyond my door,

Summer curfew in effect,

And I am no longer locked in,

I am soaring above my city,

Listening to lovers at the park,

Water fountains splashing in time to my heartbeat,

Stoplights shining like Christmas in June,

And I am carried away by these city sounds,

Over the sparkling Mountain sides,

Down across the mile high city,

Through these pavement puzzles I know so well,

I am everywhere at once,

Asleep,

In my cloud above the sky.
