As the waves break and the gulls cry a lonesome boat sails into the night
As the wind howls and the skies darken it passes the rocks on which many have been broken
As the clouds part and the rain descends it sails out into the wide open
And as I watch sat on this lonesome beach, the boat slowly slips further and further out of reach.
For as I await upon it's triumphant return, from distant lands where the midnight fires burn,
I skip a pebble across the waters skin, causing ripples the stone can drown within,
I whistle a tune no one has ever heard, which is answered by an unseen nameless bird,
Bringing me comfort and life to my eyes, and I no longer feel so alone on this beach tonight.
From out of nowhere I see a solitary light, a signal that tells me we are within sight,
Of untold wealth and gifts so fine, Gin and Lace, Tobacco and Wine,
I take the rope and help bring the boat ashore, singing a shanty with those who’ve been here before,
We unload the treasures in a chain gang fashion, to sell for profit to those safe within their mansions.
I smile as I watch, for now I know, why as a child, I would stare from my window,
When I was young and full of dreams, there was always only one life for me, so it seems,
And if like me you sit and stare, into the night and the heart of nowhere,
Smile when you see that solitary light, when like me, you will sit and wait on this beach tonight.
