Leaves dropped without reason

As moments of life pass scattered in waves of collective treason

And frigid winds ran down backlit streets

Erasing lone footprints from trails traveled long ago.

And

Light arose from silence

Brightening darkness with no regard for the squalor beneath

Nor the winds, nor cries, nor pleads.

Whatever was continued

And then rain dampened through clothes

And flesh

And bones.

And

For those more fortunate

Phones still lay dormant

And cars were abandoned stuck stagnant on idle

While motors lay quiet and everything was silent

Save for the bums who snored tired in the gutters.

I saw dark tones wash moody skies.

I watched loneliness and abandonment engulf an entire city.

There were ragged dogs hungry

And in the silent streets they tussled

While looks of despair

Chance met amongst strangers

Collected from averted gazes.
