according to someone, absolute liberty

is absence of restraint, which

makes sense to me in some

of my weaker moments.

I think, as I often do,

about animals.  more specifically,

I think about lions,

which, I've been told, don't keep a mate

and are the only animals besides man

that have sex for pleasure.

and I think about pigeons and I wonder

if they know what they're missing

while the shit on cars

and eat breadcrumbs all day,

if their time wouldn't be better spent

doing something else, and

I wonder, in moments like these,

who's more free - me or the pigeon?

depending on the dictionary,

restraint is either the loss of freedom

or the act of keeping something under control,

neither of which sounds particularly appealing

when I think about "absolute liberty,"

which looks to me like a lion

on the savanna,

rolling over after his fourth romp of the day,

maybe stretching,

maybe yawning,

maybe lighting a cigarette,

and maybe, I like to think,

wondering what all the other animals

do with their days.
