Well, where to start…I’m 25 years old and I've been addicted to poetry for as long as I remember. I had my first poem published when I was 7 yrs old, a dramatic non rhyming poem about a fortress of sand that was dragged back into the raging waters of the ocean, leaving a prawn king and queen dead, surrounded by the remains of their beautiful castle… (A little morbid I know!) But my awareness of life and death had always been inspiration for my poetry, as well as my surroundings.
I have always used poetry to write down my thoughts on adulthood, my struggling relationship with my father and a way to express myself whenever I was happy or sad. Last year I collaborated with an illustrator to put together a children’s rhyming story called "The Adventures of Stanley Dru" based loosely on my own imaginary adventures as a child, when I used to accompany my mother on her cleaning jobs around Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Recently I have just finished a book of love poetry "For Every Day That You Are Away" a collection of 23 poems I wrote, one a day for the 23 days I was away from my partner. The poems are thickly drenched it heartfelt love and tenderness documenting the richness that love can bring to your life and how amazing it is to feel.
I would like to have my work published one day and I hope if I keep on producing work and aiming for my goal I will eventually succeed. Poetry is underestimated for its power, for me, nothing can beat reading and writing poetry, it can touch the soul in a way that stories and films cannot. Poetry is not just a passion, it’s my life.
