Her heart in her hands.
Her arms outstretched.
A certain smile striding forward,
“Take it. It’s yours forever.”
His hesitating head tilting sideways,
she upturns his palms,
curls his fingers around her heart.
A smile. A kiss. A beat.
“I’ll take good care of it.”
Slumped on its side.
Sluggishly beating.
“Come over.”
“Okay, see you soon.”
T-shirts tossed into the air.
"I better hide this.”
He hurls the heart into a heap of clothes
A knock on the door.
A purple bruise.
A twinge in her chest.
“Here. You should have this back.”
Mumbling, “Sorry.”
Walking the other way
To a brown-haired girl he catches up.
She places a bright red beat into his hands.
He cradles it. Kisses it. Pulls her closer.
Her heart in her hands.
Her arms outstretched.
“Remember what happened last time..?”
A finger pushes purple.
Another twinge.
“Shhhh.”
Waving the warning away.
“It’s different this time.”
“Take it. It’s yours forever.”
Grabbing the heart,
He turns it around in a circle.
Tosses it into the air.
A football.
Chuckling. Shrugging.
Drops it to the floor.
Silent.
Staring straight.
“Breathe. Just breathe.”
Keeling down,
She brushes off the dust.
Places a band-aid on its top.
Arms cradling close to her chest.
“Please don’t do that again.”
