Alexander

For Riccardo...

Death falls over your grave and the birds sing

The ballad of angels on the battlefield

Death falls over your grave soil falls in

Marked by embroidered sword

The frowning face of history

Marked by the deeds of war

Alexander and history is no more

Beneath my fingertips ancient earth lies

A thousand years becomes just you and I

In one moment under the sun

I will break up earth, his grave will be undone

Through the soils and the clay

The Ancient world will become today

Millennial processions of royal embers

Blowing out as the moon draws closer

Embers blowing out into the winds of forever

Scattered through time, ravaged by weather

The gods remain seated, now or never

We sit too and turn the earth, breaking her

Alexander, what man may have lived

That the name of King unto you we give

Strong indeed, the black pagan steed

Crossing countries like mine, into the wild

Into the heart of time

So we study your steps

And mark your grave, upon the world

Resting beneath waves, I would prefer

So we may never find again

Your treasure and your bane

Be with the mountains, be with the sea

You were man, neither god nor beast

Depart from the minds of men,

They dream of now being as it were back then

It cannot be, and never shall

All we have is the earth

And all we have is a man hidden in the soil

Dead kings are hard to find.
