The moment they broke up Marie could sense that somewhere somehow it didn't happen. In a parallel universe she and Paul worked through their fight. They got married and a million other universes fractured and burst into being.

They had kids didn't have kids bought a house rented a brownstone lived out of their cars, drove across the country, cheated on each other, and had a million other fights. They owned purebred setters. They became cat people. They inherited a parrot. They gardened, learned to sail and spent 6,543 nights in front of a TV set -- together and apart.

In a corner of existence, they drew their last breaths of love as they died of old age. But everywhere it ended, in one way or another. In other universes, their relationship had never begun.

Thank you. I'd agree that there's something more to be explored here, but it came to me as a piece of flash fiction (something I've been working on writing lately).
