I Just Called to Say

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

I just called to see if you could talk,

To tell you Merry Christmas,

Or at least that's what I said,

Because obviously you couldn't,

Stop to say hello,

Not even for a second,

I could tell by the quick way you answered,

How you been?,

Good.

And so I asked about your life,

And you breathed into the phone,

Letting me know you didn't have a good connection,

So I chose not to tell you,

That I've missed you again,

That I dreamt of you last night,

Of Christmas at Aunt Gwens...

I chose not to tell you,

That I dreamt of your voice,

I had to call you,

I wasn't given a choice,

But thank you for being so...

Preoccupied,

A little of your life,

Did you let me spy,

You're still the same Topher,

Just grinding the stone,

And maybe I'm not the only one,

Who feels so alone.

I often wonder what you've done since Cracker Barrel by RDU. I recall you were dressed in black. I should have come when you asked. But I'll be damned, you can't take time back.

That restaurant, several years ago. A cup of coffee, then the flight back to our cars, but not before a kiss. I should have come when you called.
