Premonition

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

I see them most days

when they drop by the cafe

for breakfast

they're coming in

I'm walking out

the old man's wiry

cantankerous

the wife is a kinder sort

she's learned how to deal

with the old man

they always come in an

ancient Dodge pick-up

she's behind the wheel

he's on the passenger side

two irish setters in the back

he gets out and goes back

to the truck bed

hugs each of the setters and

lets them lick his face

telling them they won't be

gone long and not to worry

the wife looks back at him

and smiles, knowing what a good

heart he has even though he tries

never to let it show

I see it all and smile too

knowing that in twenty

years, this could have

been us
