He thought of love as investment.

Resources committed.

Profit to be claimed.

He only rarely took

his interest in pleasure

 

“That’s how you lose your head ”

he would say.

“And your shirt.”

 

One day

he tucked her sanity

into a briefcase and left

without knowing what

it was she might have 

most wished for.

 

Had he asked

she would have told him.

It was only his heart,

without recognizing

that deal had never once

been on the table.
