A Penny Saved

When pennies ought to be saved

seeing them pack up and leave becomes an addiction

mother’s lip stick stained teeth said so

when her pencil thin brown frowned at the wager

a penny for a summer spent in plush meringue

reckoning copper metal drops from the sky with the rain
