Rest right here in the safety of our bed
And I'll whisper pillowy words thread by thread.

The solid oak fixed to the iron rails
Are my promises not some fairy tales.

If drafting doubts invade our secret place
My skin's silky sheets will keep you safe.

See lights in our expansive canopy--
They're children's children--our lasting legacy.

We're older than we thought we'd ever be,
Still, side-by-side, we sleep delicately.

So do not fear because of nightly dread,
I will always be here, in our coffin-bed.

Stunning ending. I was taken totally by surprise. Nice.

I'm right there with you, Alberto. Wow! This reads like an epitaph of a lover's tomb. So alive in feeling, so ancient in meaning. Thank you for sharing this, Joshua.

Thank you for the compliments. It's been a long time since I've had the muse and even then I tried to make time for it. I'm working on getting poets from the "spoken word" circuit to join Hennen's Observer. It should add diversity to the website....

I really like this - a different, but romantic and soft perspective on the ole' ball and chain syndrome of marriage. It's lovely...I really really like it. :-)

I agree, this is a wonderful poem that could be viewed as morbid or sweet. I like to take it as both.

Nice piece of work. I like your simplicity of meanings, and the richness of the words you use.
A love that lives on forever, and forevermore.
