Let’s Dig Ourselves A Rut

Let’s dig ourselves a hole

so tall we can’t crawl out.

We’ll sit down at the bottom

and drown in our self doubt

We’ll make an art of misery

as though that were the goal

Let’s get married

and dig ourselves a hole

Let’s dig ourselves a rut

We’ll make it sheer and deep

Our lives will be so boring

we’ll put ourselves asleep

Sure, we could just walk away

and avoid all of this, but

Let’s get married

and dig ourselves a rut

Let’s dig ourselves a pit

and surround ourselves with grief

Let’s make despair a virtue

of our only shared belief

But it might not be so awful

Let’s go ahead with it

Let’s get married

and dig ourselves a pit

We just might end up happy

We won’t know ‘til we try, but

let’s get married and

dig ourselves a rut
