Ash and Thought

This is my grave.

My final spot.

The world is black.

The ground is hot.

The flame peels the skin from my bone.

I stand stuck within a scream.

Staring at the outside of my home.

"Run away! Save yourself!"

She screams eyes red and cheeks livid.

"Don't die. It is not your time!"

"Run my love."

I say, putting out my hand.

Seeing my skin gone, and my tissue singed.

I smile for a moment, and then sing.

The flame burns.

The world is ending.

My bones are brittle, and the sky heavy.

Softly I say with a moment to spare.

"Forgive me. I love you dear."

Now I am nothing but ash and thought.

Lying in a pile of soot, and rocks.

She cries over my remains.

And puts out the fire with her feet.

Desperately she grabs hold of me.

Lifts my powdered self into the air.

And throws me up, I'm free and light as a feather.

The wind grows strong, and blows me away.

Goodbye my love.

I hope to see you again one day.

Can you shed some light unto what this all about?

Thanks!

Thanks for the question. As I wrote it, I was imagining the end of the world. And it was as simple as thinking of two lovers stuck in the middle of it. The poem begins as the man sacrifices himself for her, and it is what he's thinking as the flame peels his flesh off. “Ashes to ashes; dust to dust.” By the end he is where we all began: dust. Yet his spirit is still there. Love is eternal could be the thing you could get from it. For me though it's meant to be a promise, a goodbye... and maybe they will see each other again: hope in the midst of hopelessness.
